I had a very hard time a couple of weeks ago explaining to my grandmother, who is 83 years-old and a news watching addict, why there are still US Army Soldiers still in Iraq. She saw the cheering waving Soldiers cross the border of Iraq and Kuwait on September 1st and believed all of the hype on the television news that all American combat troops were out of Iraq. While this is technically true since the Department of Defense renamed combat brigades and left out the word “combat” and changed the name of the campaign from Operation Iraqi Freedom to Operation New Dawn, the fact still remains that there are tens of thousands of American military men and women still serving in Iraq today. And, those Soldiers are still earning combat pay for their efforts and rightly so.
